Beginners Guide to Dermal Fillers

If you have found yourself toying with the idea of whether or not you should get lip fillers, we created this brief guide to inform you of both the benefits and potential risks that come with getting lip filler injections.

What are Lip Fillers Made of?

At Reveal Image Aesthetics, we use Juvederm, the world’s #1 selling dermal filler lip filler. Juvederm is a facial filler made out of a hyaluronic acid gel. Juvederm is a naturally occurring substance in the skin with the intent of temporarily diminishing the appearance of moderate to severe facial wrinkles.

How to Prep/Precautions Before Fillers

  • Advise Reveal Image Aesthetics © if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The safety of these products for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding have yet to be studied or determined.
  • Advise Reveal Image Aesthetics © if you have a history of scarring or pigmentation disorders.
  • Advise Reveal Image Aesthetics © if you are using medications such as aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve or other blood thinners. This may prolong bleeding. If possible, please refrain from the use of these medications for at least 24 hours prior to receiving treatment, and up to a week if possible.
  • Advise Reveal Image Aesthetics © if you are on immunosuppressive therapy used to decrease the body’s immune response. This may increase the risk of infection.
  • One week prior to injection, avoid the supplements St John’s Wort, Gingko Biloba, Primrose Oil, Ginseng, and Vitamin E.
  • Avoid all alcoholic beverages at least twenty-four hours prior to treatment.
  • If you are prone to getting cold sores, the needle that is used may provoke a cold sore outbreak.
  • On the day of your treatment, please arrive to your appointment with no makeup on. If that’s not possible or you forget, we have makeup removing wipes, gentle facial cleansers, hair ties, and disposable sanitary headbands for your convenience.
  • To maximize your comfort, a topical numbing ointment will be applied to the lips after the doctor cleans your lips with a pre-moistened alcohol prep pad.

What You Should Do After Fillers- A Timeline

Immediately after receiving your lip fillers, you may see some swelling and bruising. This is completely normal and the severity of swelling will vary from patient to patient based on a lot of factors. After injection and up to four hours after injection, it is advised for the patient to take it easy, avoid kissing, and be gentle around the lip area as the filler has not completely settled yet. In most cases. swelling is so minor that people can go to work the same day without any obvious notice. If there is noticeable swelling, which we try to avoid with our fine technique, then this should subside within three days. To ease swelling, the patient may choose to ice their lips for 24-48 hours following treatment. Final results can be seen in two weeks time after the filler has settled. Refrain from using lip gloss, lipstick, or other cosmetic lip products on the treated area for at least a day.

Strenuous exercise, extreme heat, alcoholic beverages, and excessive kissing should be avoided for the initial 24 hours post-treatment. Also, if possible, avoid drinking through a straw and pursing your lips unnecessarily as this actually may misshapen the appearance of your fillers over time.

There will always be variance among patients in regards to how long lip fillers can last. On average, expect to enjoy your plump lips for 8-12 months after injection. If you are unhappy with your results, which we are confident that you won’t be, there is something called hyaluronidase. Its purpose is to dissolve lip fillers if there should be dissatisfaction or an issue.
